What Should You Do If Your Car Breaks Down on a Busy Motorway?

Avery Hawkins

It's a situation most people hope will never happen. What will you do if your car breaks down in the middle of a busy motorway? You're feeling anxious and unsure of what to do next. Can you repair it yourself or should you call for help? Crucially, what steps should you take if you ever find yourself stranded on a motorway?

Step 1: Stay calm and pull over

The first rule of a motorway breakdown is to stay calm. Don't panic, as this can only make the situation worse. You need to be alert, focused and quick-thinking so that you can get through this situation safely. That said, you should keep your cool and stay composed so that you can take control of the situation.

Once you regain control, pull over to the hard shoulder, if possible, and park your car at the side of the road. Do this as quickly as possible to avoid obstruction, and be sure to put your car in neutral with the handbrake on. Put on your hazard lights as a warning to other motorists that you're in trouble.

Step 2: Assess the situation

Once you've parked your car safely, stay inside the car and assess the situation from a safe distance. Check to see if there are any threatening conditions like fire or smoke that are a result of the breakdown.

If you cannot see the issue and you cannot restart the engine, this is a job for a professional mechanic.

Step 3: Call for help

If you cannot restart your engine, it's time to call for help. Dial an emergency breakdown company as soon as possible. Make sure you provide the operator with your location and other critical information about the situation, like how many people are with you and the exact location you're calling from. Remember, it's a good idea to have the phone number of an emergency breakdown service in your mobile device, should you ever need it.

Step 4: Stay safe

With your call in, the next crucial point is to stay safe and tucked away while waiting for assistance. Sit inside the car and wait for help to arrive, putting on your seat belts belt as well, just in case.

While waiting, do not attempt to fix the car yourself, especially if you're not a professional auto mechanic. Remember that the highway is a dangerous place to work on your vehicle, and it's easy to get into an accident within those circumstances.

What to Remember

Breaking down on a motorway is every driver's nightmare. However, if you follow the above steps, you can effectively manage the situation and stay safe until professional help comes along. Remember to stay calm, stay safe and don't hesitate to reach out to an emergency breakdown company for assistance.

About Me
Buying Vehicles of Every Kind

Hi! My name is Ken and this is my auto blog. I am super interested in vehicles of every kind. As a kid, I loved anything with wheels. Two wheels, four wheels, eight wheels. It was all great to me. I grew up hanging around my uncle's garage you see, so I learnt lots of cool things when people brought in their old autos and exchanged them for new ones. I am now 37 years old. Although I didn't enter the auto business myself, I still like to buy and sell the occasional car or truck using the tips and tricks I learnt as a child. Read on to find out more.
